Medical Amber
Not only because of its beauty and for its interesting history (originated more than 30 millions of years ago), it is also interesting because it has been used during centuries with medial purposes. Practices that today are unfortunately in disuse, according to the comments of professor Мошков.
Professor Мошков (Mashkov) has published a new book with the name "Исцеляющее тепло Янтаря" (the warm healing of the amber), where important curative qualities are attributed to the amber. Specially anti-stress qualities, considering that stress is considered the root reasons of all illnesses (according to several new medical research- See book The healing code for easy reference). This book about the amber has not been still translated to the English, even having nine editions in Russian.
One of the procedures recommend is to have baths with bracelets of raw amber in warm water.
In addition to this book, I think it is still interesting to comment the origin of the amber: it comes of the fossilized resin of the tress that lived 300 millions of years ago!. This resin is produced by the trees to heal of wounds. And this way sometimes the resin could "catch" some little insects or animals. Many now extinguished, but that they keep in the amber. So it has been said that the amber is the only things that rises in value because of having a fly inside!
Later on, the amber has suffered a process of fossilization. So we can not say that the amber is a mineral, because it has an organic origin.
There are many methods to know if the amber is authentic or not. The more usual is to submerge it in water and salt. If it floats, then it is authentic amber. We should not forget that the world amber comes from the Arab language and means "what floats in the water".
Other persons say that they can know if it true amber because of its tact. The amber has a warm tact that can not be confounded. Other procedures are firing a little piece of amber, and according to the kind of smoke we can know if it true amber or plastic.
Unfortunately, all the procedures that we have to detect if the amber is authentic of not are destructive (it imply to destruct the piece under analisis. Today we can find plastic that amber that floats in the sea, even with little insects inside! So the best method is to buy them from a trusted source.
